| RESEARCH |
If companies had a crystal ball that
would show them the future and how to change it to meet
their business goals, uncertainty in business would be
eliminated. But companies do not have a crystal ball.
The closest thing we have to accomplish this is research.
Research looks at the past and/or the present to help
us make predictions about the future. What direction are
your customers moving in? What is the competition doing?
Which markets offer a company the greatest opportunity
for growth? Though research is not a perfect indicator,
it often provides valuable insight that can help a company
steer a course towards greater success.
The concern most people have with utilizing research is
the cost and viability of the results to meet the company’s
specific needs. Both of these issues can be controlled
and managed so the company can get exactly what they need,
within a reasonable budget through focused research projects.
Research of an entire industry or customer base is often
performed to statistically minimize the margin of error.
But most companies do not need this degree of accuracy.
They need an understanding of where the market is going,
not a perfect picture, just one that allows them to make
better business decisions around issues that are critical
to their organization.
Focused research can include only a few companies, or
a solid section of the market you want to analyze. It
can involve web or phone surveys, review of existing research,
or face to face interviews with personnel from specific
companies. But it always starts with your objectives.
This is the most critical first step in conducting research
– the identification of your true needs. Once this
is determined, we ask our clients to set a budget. We
then work with you to outline a methodology that can accomplish
your goals within the budget you set.
Focused research is not a crystal ball, nor is it meant
to be. It is a cost effective method of providing you
with information that will help guide your decisions about
the direction your organization is moving in. |
